Back to the mundane aspects, most people in my generation prefer text to phone calls. Relying on short messages deprives us of the intimacy derived from vocal tonality, pace and conversation. Instead of going to the gym or joining a social club, people opt for one hundred channels of high-definition television. The emotions we crave from action flicks, RomComs, and social networking sites is merely a poor substitute for life itself.
A dystopian portrayal of this extreme is the Bruce Willis film “Surrogates”. The majority of inhabitants use surrogate bodies for their daily routines while their physical bodies wither away inside an immersion cocoon. The VR stimuli satisfies their hindbrain at little threat to their safety and survival. Bruce Willis is one of the few refusing to substitute life for technological immersion.
Sex dolls will probably add to withdrawal from life. Escapist strides were made years ago with the manufacture of plastic-molded vaginas and asses. Famous starlets like Jenna Jamison and Tera Patrick can now give their fans a pseudo-intimate experience. From a synthetic pelvis to full-sized bodies, technology is making life easy for humanity to fulfill their instincts without the stress of true achievement.
Porn works the same way. We’re tricking our brains into thinking we’re reproductively succeeding but it’s an illusion. Snake oil. Take this further to current technologies in their infantile stages. VR porn will create major tears in social fabric. The average guy will opt-out of the dating scene and fulfill his libidinous desires with a bottle of Jergens and high-quality virtual reality immersion from the comfort of his own home. For many men, a virtual “dime” trumps the flesh and blood of an average-looking girl with personality flaws.
Action movies sate our adventurous, adrenaline-filled desires. I’m a big fan of movies like “Point Break”, “Roadhouse”, “Tombstone” and anything with explosions, fast cars and fighting. The emotions, the adrenaline rush, the intensity of the movie are transferred vicariously. Like a rollercoaster, we get the experience without the actual stimulus. Watching Swayze kick ass reminds me of past fights and being in the ring. When Walker and Diesel shift frantically through gears, it rekindles fond memories of racing along I-90 in my 5-speed VTEC Integra.
The past few decades heralded unprecedented technological changes. The world of 2011 is more different from 1900 than 1900 to 1400AD. Only a fool or the Amish believe technology hasn’t changed every facet of our lives. I theorize that technology is slowly substituting our real world experiences for virtual stimulation. Let’s examine a few mundane examples then envision future dystopia.
